Wood Pet Gate
When you have pets, especially dogs, you usually have the need
for some kind of containment devices for them. This is almost always true for when they’re outside, but you often
need a way to keep them contained in certain areas inside as well. For that reason, many people use a simple wood
pet gate. These gates can come in a variety of styles and designs, and what kind you buy depends on where you
usually want to contain your pet, what type of pet you have, and how concerned you are about how the gate looks
where you put it up.
There was a standard type of wood pet gate that people used to
buy frequently, which was the accordion-style kind that used a hook and eye to stay open. The hook was located on
the gate, and the eye was secured into the wall or door frame. A lot of people have moved away from using these
kinds of wood gates for their pets, however, because for one thing that design made the gate less sturdy in the
middle, and pinching injuries could be a problem. Today’s wood gate for pets are usually reinforced so that they
are strong everywhere, and they use sliding panels to expand or retract, making them much safer.
Though a wood pet gate can be made entirely out of wood, that
isn’t necessarily always the case. They can have a wood frame that contains wire mesh or plastic fencing. Rarely
are they ever solid wood all the way through, since most people prefer being able to see their pets on the other
side of the gate. The ones that are made entirely of wood usually have either long slats that are spaced close
enough together to keep the gate strong, or they have wood slats that are crisscrossed between the frame.
Unquestionably the most popular styles of wood gates for pets, however, are the ones with the wire of plastic mesh
within the wood frames.
Though most of your larger pet stores such as PetsMart and
PetCo will carry a wood pet gate, you don’t necessarily have to narrow your search to these places. Larger home
supply stores such as Lowe’s or Home Depot, or sometimes smaller hardware stores may carry these gates as well. If
they don’t actually carry them, they may carry the plans-and certainly the materials-so you can make one yourself
if you feel you want to do that. Whether you shop at a large pet store, home store or even a department store, you
can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to over $100, depending on your needs.
There are many excellent online retailers that have good
selections when it comes to a wood pet gate. Petsolutions.com carries a standard wood frame pet gate with wire mesh
fencing and slide panels for around $40. They also carry an all-wood gate that has an access door built in so you
can let your pet in and out easily. This sells for $28 for a small one, and $45 for the taller one.
Pet-Super-Store.com sells a nice-looking cherry wood stand-alone pet gate with wire mesh for around $105, and they
offer free shipping for orders over $75.
